Education Pt. 13: DIY Quail Treats & Forage Mixes: Coturnix-safe ideas that won’t crash your nutrition plan

Mission Brief
Treats are fun, foraging is healthy, and Coturnix quail love both, but your base ration still builds and flies the plane. Think of treats as tiny course-corrections, not a new flight plan. Keep total treats to ≤10% of daily intake (5% is even better) so you don’t dilute protein, amino acids, and minerals in a balanced crumble. When in doubt, feed the complete feed first, then a small treat window after.
Treat Math: Don’t Wreck the Ration
A good quail crumble (starter/grower or layer) already hits your targets for protein, methionine/lysine, energy, and micronutrients. Big piles of seeds, fruit, or mealworms can drop protein and spike calories, leading to softer shells, slower growth, or spotty lay. Keep a simple rule: one small, cupped handful of treats per 10–12 birds, once a day or a few times per week.
Why Grit Might Be Needed (Even on Crumble)
Crumble is already milled—quail don’t need grit to digest it. But when you add whole grains, seeds, fibrous greens, or chitin-heavy insects, they benefit from insoluble granite grit to help the gizzard grind. Offer a tiny dish of #1 (quail-size) granite grit free-choice whenever treats/forage are in the rotation.
Note: Grit ≠ calcium. Oyster shell is soluble calcium for layers; don’t force-mix it into everyone’s feed. Offer oyster shell free-choice so only laying hens partake.

SAFE Treats (Green-light, small portions)
Use fresh, clean produce—no pesticides, no mold, no lawn clippings.
Tender greens & herbs: romaine, kale, chard, spinach (small), beet tops, clover, dandelion, plantain, chickweed, parsley, dill, cilantro. Chop finely.
Vegetables: cucumber, zucchini, squash, peas, cooked pumpkin/sweet potato (plain), bell pepper, carrots (grated).
Sprouts & microgreens: wheat, barley, oats, millet, pea shoots. Drain well; serve fresh.
Seeds & grains (sparingly): white proso millet, canary seed, sorghum, amaranth. Think teaspoons, not scoops.
Animal protein (tiny boosts): dried black soldier fly larvae or mealworms—pepper, don’t pour.
Fruit (rare, tiny): blueberries, strawberry ends, apple bits (no seeds), melon. High sugar; treat-treat, not daily fare.
“Use Caution” Treats (Yellow-light)
These aren’t poison, but they steal nutrition fast if you overdo them.
Scratch-style mixes and heavy seed blends (fill birds up, drop protein).
High-fat nuts (hard to grind; demand grit; calorie bombs).
Brassica overload (kale/cabbage family): fine in variety; too much can bother digestion.
Spinach/oxalates: okay as part of a mix; don’t let it dominate.

DANGEROUS or POISON to Coturnix (Red-light, hard NO)
Avocado skin/pit (persin toxin).
Chocolate, coffee/tea (caffeine/theobromine). (Tristi is bummed about the no coffee for them part)
Alcohol, raw dough (yeast expansion).
Moldy/spoiled feed or produce (mycotoxins).
Green potato peels/sprouts; tomato/pepper leaves (nightshade alkaloids).
Uncooked/dry beans (kidney, etc.) (lectins); castor bean, foxglove, lily of the valley, rhubarb leaves (oxalates).
Onion/garlic in quantity (risk of hemolytic anemia).
Long grass/stringy clippings (impaction), treated lawn/garden plants (chemicals), wild mushrooms (unknown toxins).When in doubt, skip it.

DIY Forage Mixes (Zero G–Approved)
Keep portions small; add grit whenever seeds/whole items are included.
1) Winter Micro-Forage
2 parts mixed microgreens (wheat/barley/pea shoots)
1 part finely chopped romaine + herb mix (parsley/dill/cilantro)
Dust with crushed eggshell (baked & crumbled) for layers only; oyster shell offered separately.
2) Light Seed Sprinkle (Training Treat)
2 tsp white proso millet
1 tsp canary seed
1 tsp amaranth
Optional: ½ tsp dried soldier fly larvaeToss across clean bedding or a forage tray to promote natural pecking.
3) High-Fiber Veg Mix
Finely grated carrot + zucchini
Minced chard/romaine
A few peas (thawed if frozen)Serve in a shallow dish; remove leftovers after an hour.
How to Serve (and Keep It Clean)
Timing: Complete feed first; treats after.
Placement: Use a dedicated forage tray; shake out and dry between uses.
Portioning: For a 12-bird pen, think 2–4 tablespoons total per offer for most mixes.
Remove leftovers promptly to avoid mold and pests.
Sample Weekly Treat Flight Plan
Mon: Micro-forage handful + grit available
Wed: Seed sprinkle (2–3 tsp total / 12 birds) + grit
Fri: Veg mix (¼–½ cup total / 12 birds)
Sun: 1–2 tsp dried larvae split across the flock (optional) Everything else: complete feed + clean water, always.

Troubleshooting
Runny droppings / messy vents: cut treats by half; return to crumble focus.
Shell quality dips: reduce low-protein treats; confirm calcium access for layers; check overall protein.
Birds ignoring feed: treats are too frequent or too big; reset for a week.
Crop/gizzard concerns: confirm grit is available whenever seeds/insects/greens are fed.
Bottom Line
Treats should enrich behavior and support health, not hijack the ration. Keep them tiny, clean, and purposeful; deploy grit when you add whole textures; and protect your base feed like mission fuel. Coturnix are honest teachers—when you keep the nutrition steady and the enrichment smart, they’ll pay you back with calm birds, tidy pens, and eggs that say, “systems go.”
